USG commercial office ceiling and wall solutions

Commercial Office

Open-plan offices require ceilings that tame ambient noise while accommodating HVAC, lighting, and technology infrastructure. USG Radar® and Mars® panels deliver high NRC ratings in a clean, specification-friendly format. Movable glass partition walls with Sheetrock® backer achieve STC 50+ without full-height demising walls.

USG healthcare ceiling systems

Healthcare

Healthcare environments demand cleanable, infection-resistant surfaces with acoustic privacy. USG Mars® panels meet ASTM D3273 mold resistance and support HIPAA acoustic privacy standards. Our fire-rated gypsum assemblies for patient room separations are UL Listed and meet hospital-specific code requirements in all 50 states.

USG education acoustical ceiling solutions

Education

Research demonstrates that classroom acoustics directly impact student comprehension and teacher vocal fatigue. USG ceiling panels exceed ANSI S12.60 classroom acoustics standards. Our impact-resistant Sheetrock® panels handle the daily wear of K-12 corridors and gyms without scheduled replacement cycles.

USG data center fire-rated wall and ceiling systems

Data Centers

Mission-critical facilities require 2-hour fire-rated shaft walls, smoke barriers, and mechanical penetration sealing that meets IBC Chapter 7. USG's Sheetrock® Shaft Wall Liner panels provide structural stiffness without conventional framing, enabling fast installation in tall shafts while maintaining UL V438 listing.

Technical Questions by Industry

Commercial & Healthcare

For speech privacy in open-plan offices, USG recommends pairing a high-CAC ceiling tile (CAC 35+) such as the Mars® Fine Fissured with a properly tuned sound masking system. The ceiling's CAC rating governs how much sound from adjacent spaces penetrates the plenum. USG's Comparison Tool at usg.com/ceilings allows side-by-side NRC/CAC selection based on room type.

Yes. USG publishes a comprehensive Healthcare Assembly Guide with specific UL-listed wall and ceiling assemblies for Group I-2 occupancies. These include corridor smoke-barrier walls, patient room separations, and rated plenum barriers. The USG Assembly Library provides downloadable submittals with full UL design numbers for AHJ review.

Education & Government

Multiple Sheetrock® drywall products and Radar® acoustical ceiling panels carry GREENGUARD Gold certification. These products are tested by UL Environment for over 10,000 chemical emissions and are approved for use in schools and healthcare facilities. A complete GREENGUARD Gold certificate list is available on request through your USG sales representative.

USG Sheetrock® Impact panels are tested per ASTM C1629 and achieve Surface Abrasion Level 3 and Soft Body Impact Level 3 — the highest commercial classification. For gymnasiums, we recommend pairing Impact panels with 20-gauge steel studs at 12" o.c. for maximum field performance. USG technical consultants can provide layout recommendations for specific gym dimensions.

Residential & Multi-Family

Yes — Sheetrock® Mold Tough® Firecode X combines mold and moisture resistance with Type X fire performance in a single panel. It meets ASTM C840 moisture resistance requirements, scores 10 (the maximum) on ASTM D3273 mold resistance, and contributes to 1-hour or 2-hour UL fire-rated assemblies. This eliminates the need for two separate panel types in fire-rated bathroom demising walls.

USG Sheetrock® SoundBreak XP, when used in our tested SoundBreak assemblies, can achieve STC ratings from 50 to 67 depending on framing type, stud spacing, and infill insulation. The STC 50 assembly meets IBC minimum requirements for dwelling unit separations; the STC 60+ assemblies address luxury and senior living projects where noise complaints are a liability risk. Full assembly details are in the USG Acoustical Design Guide, available in the Assembly Library.
