Receiving Checklist: USG Sheetrock Brand Firecode X Panels, USG Diamond Veneer Plaster, and Ceiling Tiles

Who this checklist is for

A truck pulls up, the driver needs a signature, and you have maybe ten minutes to decide whether the material on the trailer is worth installing. I've been on the receiving side of that moment for years, and I can tell you: most material problems are caught in those ten minutes or not at all.

I'm a quality/compliance manager in the building-materials business. I review incoming product and field failures, roughly 300 line items a year. In 2024, about 9% of the first deliveries I checked had something wrong enough to send back or set aside. The checklist below is the one I use, written for people who handle USG gypsum board, veneer plaster finishes, and acoustic ceilings.

Two caveats. This was accurate as of early 2025; products and listings get updated over time. And my experience is heavily USG and commercial-interior. If you're working with a different manufacturer or an exterior system, adapt the steps rather than following them blindly.

The receiving checklist

Seven checks. Most take less than a minute. Do them before the forklift unloads, not after.

1. Check the product identification before you trust the pallet

Plastic wrap hides more than it protects. The number one receiving mistake I see is assuming that because the delivery paperwork says USG Sheetrock Brand Firecode X Panels, the whole pallet is actually Firecode X. Core types get mixed on pallets more often than people think, especially when a warehouse is running low on a product.

Look for the product marking printed on the board back paper or on the bundle label. Check at least the top and bottom boards of a stack, not just the side facing you. If the stamp says one thing and the packing slip says another, stop the unload.

2. Measure thickness and look at the exposed edges

Firecode X panels are typically 5/8-inch Type X panels. Every now and then, a damaged 1/2-inch panel gets tossed on top of a 5/8-inch pallet. In a stack, the difference gets hidden. It will not be hidden in the wall when the tape job looks wrong or the fire inspector checks the assembly.

Take a micrometer or caliper to a few boards, not just one. While you're at it, check the ends for crushed or cracked core. A couple of slightly damaged boards can be cut down for smaller pieces, but a pallet with several broken corners means trouble.

3. Face paper damage is not cosmetic

The paper on a gypsum panel carries a lot of the load in a wall system. Scores, tears, and paper delamination turn into blisters or cracks later—sometimes months later, after the building has been painted.

When you inspect, look at both faces, not just the top board. Water stains on the paper, wrinkling at the edges, or a waffle pattern on the back are all red flags. In 2024, the most common reason I rejected a bundle was paper damage caused by boards sitting on a damp floor. The gypsum core and paper both wick moisture, and the damage is not always visible from the outside.

4. Cut a sample and look at the core

If the order is large, cut a small V or slice out of an end board. I know, no one wants to damage a new panel. But one sample check tells you more than any label.

USG Sheetrock Brand Firecode X panels have a denser core than regular gypsum board, and it usually contains fine glass fibers visible when you break the board across the edge. If the core looks crumbly, dark in spots, or soft, suspect moisture damage. If it has the right density and fibers, set the sample aside and move on.

5. Verify the assembly, not just the board type

It is tempting to think that buying Type X board means the wall is fire rated. That is the most common oversimplification in this industry. The fire rating belongs to the whole assembly, tested under ASTM E119 or UL 263. The board is one component. Screw spacing, stud size, insulation, joint treatment, and perimeter details all do their part.

If the plans call for a specific UL design, keep the design number handy when you receive material. That way, when board choices or fastener schedules change in the field, someone has to justify it before the drywall goes up—not after the inspector walks the job.

The X in Firecode X means the core is formulated to perform in tested assemblies. It is not a standalone promise. Firecode X panels on the wrong framing spacing can be just as risky as regular board.

6. Treat USG Diamond Veneer Plaster like a precision material

When a spec calls for USG Diamond Veneer Plaster, don't let the crew swap in regular joint compound or an unfamiliar similar mix. Veneer plaster is chosen for a reason: it produces a hard, smooth, monolithic surface and fits schedules that traditional multi-coat plaster cannot.

Check the bag before you store it. Look for a lot number and date stamp. Bags from the same lot should stay together for the same room or phase. Plaster setting behavior can vary between production runs, and chasing a set-time difference mid-wall is no fun.

Then get the bags off the floor. Gypsum plaster does not forgive moisture. A bag can look fine on the outside while the bottom edge has gone hard. Pop open one bag per pallet and run your fingers through the material. If you find clumps, get the lot replaced.

7. For color tiles, check the batches before you distribute them

If your project includes colored acoustical ceiling panels, color consistency matters more than most installers expect. The same product code from different production dates can look close in the warehouse and slightly different under the light on the ceiling. That difference is most visible in off-whites, warm whites, and light tones.

When the cartons arrive, look for the batch or lot number printed on each carton. If the order arrives in multiple lots, don't install them in sequence by lot. Mix panels from different lots before installation so variation gets distributed instead of forming one visible stripe in the middle of a ceiling. It takes less time than replacing a ceiling after it's hung.

Red flags that justify a refusal

Some signs justify rejecting a single bundle. Others should stop the whole truck. These are the ones I do not negotiate with:

  • A product marking that does not match the specified USG Sheetrock Brand Firecode X Panels.
  • Face paper that separates easily from the core or has large water stains.
  • Crumbling edges or multiple broken corners across a pallet.
  • Plaster bags with hardened lumps or visible signs of moisture.
  • Ceiling tile cartons with badly mixed lots that cannot be staged or blended before installation.

If two panels per pallet are damaged, you don't always need to reject the whole shipment. Pull the damaged boards, take photos, note the issue on the delivery receipt, and call the supplier. A receiving crew that catches the problem before unloading is in a much stronger position than one that finds it two weeks later.

Why I still run this checklist

These checks have caught enough problems that I won't skip them. There is something satisfying about stopping an issue at the dock, where the solution is to turn the truck around, instead of explaining to a client why a finished wall or ceiling has to come down.
