A quote can say, 'This price assumes X, excludes Y, and will be confirmed after field measurement.' That's not a vague disclaimer. It's a map. The customer can read it, question it, and plan for it. A blank square-foot rate might look cleaner at first, but it's only clean because it hasn't revealed what's underneath.

I still lose work to lower starting numbers. Some buyers only need the lowest number in the comparison box; that's their call. But when a deadline is real and the cost of missing it is serious, I don't have time to discover what a bid means after the fact. A transparent quote gives me something no teaser price can: a reliable total. In the end, that reliable total is what makes a cheap job cheap. The surprise is never cheap.
