Is USG Durock Cement Board Waterproof? The Costly Myth Behind Cement Board Shower Walls
Two weeks before a hotel lobby restroom deadline, the tile contractor told me they’d save $1,800 by skipping the waterproofing membrane on the Durock walls. “It’s cement board,” he said. “That stuff is waterproof.”
I’ve heard that sentence in various forms on nearly every project where a shower remodel is part of the scope. And it’s the most expensive construction myth I’ve run into. Not because cement board is bad — but because the confusion between “water-resistant” and “waterproof” can turn a routine bathroom renovation into a full-scale demolition project.
Let’s start with the basic question: Is USG Durock cement board waterproof? Straight answer: no. Water-resistant, yes. Waterproof, no. That distinction sounds like semantics, but it changes everything about how you build a shower.
The surface problem
Durock looks like a product that should repel water. It’s dense, gray, and doesn’t flinch when you splash water on it. Most people — including experienced contractors — assume that a cement-based board is the last line of defense between water and the structure behind it. That assumption is the problem.
USG’s own technical literature describes Durock as “water-resistant.” It’s designed to tolerate moisture better than paper-faced drywall, and it won’t swell or fall apart when it gets damp. But the board is essentially Portland cement, sand, and glass-fiber mesh. Uncoated cement is porous. Under direct water contact, that porosity becomes the path of least resistance for moisture to travel through the board and attack the framing behind it.
If you pour a glass of water onto a horizontal piece of Durock and leave it, you’ll see the water bead up temporarily. But after a few minutes, the surface will darken as moisture is absorbed. That darkening is the sign that the board is permeable. It’s literally pulling water into its pores. In a vertical shower wall, gravity helps water run down, but at seams and screw holes, the path is open.
Why the myth is so persistent
I’m not a materials scientist, so I’ll leave the technical details to people with lab coats. What I can tell you from the procurement side is that the industry has a terminology problem. On a construction site, “water-resistant” gets shortened to “waterproof” in conversation, and then the term sticks. Before long, the cement board itself becomes the waterproofing system in everyone’s mind — even though the manufacturer never said that.
There’s also a financial reason the myth survives. A liquid-applied waterproofing membrane costs about $0.60 to $1.20 per square foot in material, plus labor. On a typical 60-square-foot shower wall setup, that’s roughly $150–$250 in materials and about two hours of labor. Contractors who quote a low price often leave out this step to win the bid. The owner sees the cheap quote and doesn’t realize the missing membrane is a ticking clock until water shows up weeks or months later.
I keep a spreadsheet of every water-damage claim I’ve audited in the last six years. Every single one used cement board without a membrane, or with a membrane that was installed loosely at a seam. The failure point was always a joint, a corner, or a pipe penetration.
That sounds like a small detail. But a small gap at a pipe penetration is exactly where water will find its way through the board and into wood framing. Once that happens, the damage isn’t stopped by a “water-resistant” board. It’s just delayed.
The true cost of the shortcut
Let’s put numbers on it. In a commercial project I audited in 2024, a shower in a ground-floor office unit was built with Durock walls but no membrane. Nine months later, a leak showed up in the ceiling below. The source turned out to be the shower floor-to-wall joint. Water had traveled through the cement board, down the stud cavity, and soaked the plywood subfloor.
The repair required demolition of two walls, replacement of subfloor and drywall, mold remediation, and reinstallation of the entire shower. The final invoice was $12,400.
Now compare that to the waterproofing membrane that would have prevented it. On that same shower, with roughly 70 square feet of wet wall surface, a mid-grade liquid membrane plus labor would have been about $460. So the property owner saved $460 during construction, and paid $12,400 in repairs eight months later. That’s not a negotiation strategy; it’s a math failure.
And the repair didn’t just cost money. It cost time. The crew couldn’t start for three weeks because mold remediation had to be scheduled. The office stayed empty for another two weeks, and the owner lost rental income of about $1,900 per week for two weeks. So the total economic hit was closer to $16,000, with no guarantee that a future leak wouldn’t appear somewhere else.
To be fair, a lack of membrane doesn’t guarantee a leak. Water has to behave in a particular way to find the weak spot. But in a shower, water behaves that way every single day. The only question is whether the damage becomes visible in three months or in three years.
I treat waterproofing like a hurricane deductible: you buy it, hope you never use it, but if the storm hits, the cost is catastrophic. The difference is that in a shower, the hurricane hits every day.
What the fix actually looks like
The correct approach isn’t complicated. Use Durock (or another cement board) as the substrate — it’s perfectly suited for that job. Then install a continuous waterproofing membrane over the entire wet area. That means covering all seams, corners, pipe penetrations, and the floor-to-wall transition. No gaps. No “this section probably won’t get wet.” A membrane is only as good as its weakest point.
If you’re looking for a “USG Durock replacement” because you’ve heard it’s not waterproof, understand that the replacement won’t solve the problem. Every cement board on the market has the same limitation. The board is part of a system, and the waterproofing layer is a separate, mandatory component. The fix isn’t a different board; it’s the addition of a membrane.
For a frameless shower door, the same logic applies. A 3/8-inch glass door can cost $1,500 to $2,500 installed. It’s a worthy upgrade, but it’s the visible part of the system. The highest-quality door in the world won’t help if the wall behind it is absorbing water. I’ve seen homeowners happily spend $2,000 on glass, then hesitate to spend $300 on a roll of membrane. That’s backwards.
I’ll also add a note about budget sequencing. In renovation planning, people often call me asking about how much spray foam insulation costs, because they’re trying to shave a few hundred dollars off the envelope. A rush job is exactly when skipping the membrane seems like “saving time.” But the time you save can be measured in days, while the time to fix a leak is measured in weeks and months.
