I get why people skip it. You're making progress when you're hanging board and setting tile. Waiting for a coating to dry feels like wasting time. On a job site, wasted time is the thing you get yelled at for.

But let's count the total time, not the install time. My 2022 approach: three days to install, five weeks to redo. That's demolition, hauling, rebuilding the window frame, re-waterproofing, re-tiling, and fixing the interior drywall. The 2023 approach: four days to install, including cure time. Maintenance since: zero hours.

Three days plus five weeks is not faster than four days. The engineered approach is front-loaded, not slow. The only reason it feels slow is because you're not carrying a trowel for a couple of days.

Effort verdict: Approach A wins if you're measuring to the first finish line. Approach B wins if you measure to the day you're done forever. I used to measure to the first finish line. Now I measure differently.

Total Cost

This is where clients ask the question: 'how much does it cost to build a house?' My honest answer is: the number in your spreadsheet is not the number you'll write a check for. The gap is made of things like this.

Approach A materials on the 2022 shower—cement board, thinset, tile, grout, fasteners—came to about $1,200. The failure cost $4,150. You can get away with Approach A when:

  • The wall is interior, fully dry, with no plumbing and no chance of direct water contact.
  • It's a temporary structure or a remodel where the owner has explicitly accepted the risk.
  • There's no opening in the wall—no window, no niche, no penetration of any kind.

Spend the money on Approach B when:

  • It's an outdoor shower, steam shower, or any wall that gets deliberately wet.
  • There's an opening in the wet wall. If you're putting a stained glass window anywhere near water, the wall assembly is the thing that keeps that window beautiful instead of rotten.
  • You're building in a freeze-thaw climate. Ice expands, and it will find the gaps in a patchy barrier.
