In late January, a repeat customer sent over a remodel plan. White kitchen cabinets, a new pass-through, and a note that said 'Firecode tape and compound for garage ceiling.' It looked like a normal order. I'm a service manager handling drywall and ceiling system orders for 12 years. I've personally made and documented 18 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $86,000 in wasted budget. This one was not the most expensive. It was the most avoidable.

Why It Went Sideways

The architect's drawing showed a garage ceiling with a fire-resistance rating. The contractor's material list said 'Firecode compound.' The guy on the phone said 'send the Firecode compound.' So I did. The problem was that nobody wrote down the assembly number.

When the foreman unloaded the pallet, he saw the label and nodded. Halfway through the taping, the inspector called. Then came the question I still hear in my head:

The Checklist Now Lives in the Van

Know the Line Between Helpful and Overconfident

Per FTC advertising guidelines (ftc.gov), any claim that a product is 'fire-rated' has to be truthful and substantiated. As a contractor, I try to keep the same discipline. I can say a wall was built to a tested assembly. I shouldn't say a wall is 'fireproof.' That word causes more problems than it solves.

The Part I Still Remember

The white kitchen cabinets looked great. The pass-through got the light the homeowner wanted. The garage ceiling passed inspection. The stripped screw was behind a piece of fresh corner bead. What stayed with me is the moment the inspector asked for the assembly number and I didn't have an answer.

That's the real lesson: a product name is not a system. Know what the product is part of before you order it. And when you don't know, say so.
