USG All-Purpose Joint Compound: A 7-Step Checklist from a Contractor Who Learned the Hard Way

This checklist is for anyone finishing drywall with USG all-purpose joint compound—contractors, remodelers, and homeowners who want to skip the callbacks, the pinholes, and the cracked seams. I've been a project foreman handling drywall finishing jobs for 12 years. I've personally made (and documented) 31 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $28,000 in wasted budget. Now I maintain the checklist that my crew uses on every job. This is it—seven steps, each with a checkpoint.

Step 1: Walk Every Seam Before You Open a Bucket

The compound gets blamed for a lot of failures that are actually substrate problems. In my first year (2013), tape kept blistering on every single seam of a retail fit-out. I switched mud brands, re-taped a full section, and still got blisters. Turns out the drywall had been stored against a damp concrete floor and the paper face had delaminated. Looked fine from the surface, but the tape couldn't bond.

So check the walls before you mix anything. Run a hand over every seam. Verify screws are set just below the paper without tearing it. A screw that's too proud pushes a bump through every coat; one set too deep leaves a void that the mud will sink into. Look for gaps wider than 1/4 inch—they need to be filled, not floated over in one pass.

Checkpoint: Screws are set. Paper surfaces are firm. No gaps big enough to make the tape bridge a hollow space.

Step 2: Prepare the Compound the Right Way (and Don't Overmix It)

USG all-purpose joint compound is ready to use from the bucket. It needs a stir, not a beating. If you hit it with a drill mixer at full speed for several minutes, you're folding air into the mud—literally forcing bubbles into a material that will eventually dry on the wall. Those bubbles become pinholes, and pinholes show up right after the primer goes on, when it's too late to fix without a full skim.

The frustrating part is that the wall looks perfect the whole time. You'd think a smooth finish would stay smooth, but pinholes hide under the surface until the paint process reveals them. In September 2022, a 47-unit apartment order came back with pinholes on nearly every wall because my crew had "fluffed" the buckets that morning. $2,100 in rework and a one-week delay. All because I told them to make sure it was mixed well.

Use a paddle at low speed—under 200 RPM. Stir until the mud is uniform, then stop. If a bucket has separated on the shelf, fold the water back in slowly and let it sit for a few minutes.

Checkpoint: The mud is smooth, no lumps, and no air bubbles trail behind your knife when you lift it out.

Step 3: Embed the Tape With Enough Mud Bed—and Enough Pressure

Paper tape needs a mud bed, not a smear. You want roughly 1/16 inch of compound under the tape, then firm, even pressure with a 6-inch knife to squeeze the excess out. That squeeze-out is proof the tape is seated. If you're not pushing a bead of mud out from under the tape as you go, you're not pressing hard enough.

In 2014, I finished my own basement with too little mud under the tape. Every single joint blistered over the next few months. That error cost me $890 in redo material plus about three weekends I'll never get back. My wife still brings it up.

Here's something a lot of DIY guides leave out: paper tape is porous, and it needs to soak into that mud bed to bond. If the mud layer is too thin, sections of the tape never truly adhere. Pressing the tape into a thin layer and smoothing it once isn't enough. You need the pressure to push the mud into the paper's pores.

Checkpoint: No blisters when you run a finger along the taped seam. The tape feels adhered, not loose at the edges.

Step 4: Wait for the Drying Time That Nobody Wants to Wait For

This is the step that most people skip, and it has cost me more money than every other mistake combined. The label says "allow to dry." What most people don't realize is that "ready to recoat" isn't the same as "fully dry." All-purpose compound forms a skin on the surface first. It can look dry in two hours and still be soft underneath. Apply the next coat over that, trapping moisture, and the new layer shrinks as it dries—creating those hairline cracks between coats that show up after painting.

Drying time depends way more on the room than on the product. In a warm, dry space, four to six hours between coats can be enough. In a humid basement or a bathroom with wet trades still running, twenty-four hours might not be. The surprise, for me, was how much water these buckets carry. A 4.5-gallon pail of joint compound is mostly water, and that water has to leave before the compound is stable. If you don't respect that, the shrinkage cracks will find you.

Checkpoint: The surface feels dry and flat. In humid conditions, set a 24-hour rule. When the schedule pushes you to recoat early, push back—the rework will cost you more than waiting.

Step 5: Second Coat—Wider Knife, Thinner Mud, More Feathering

The second coat is about feathering, not adding thickness. Get a 10- or 12-inch knife for this pass. You're not burying the tape in one shot; you're flattening the tape edges and starting to blend the seam into the surrounding wall. Each coat should be thin enough that you can't feel much of a hump when you run your palm across it.

Beginners go wrong by laying down a thick second coat to "save time." That thick layer shrinks more, cracks more, and takes longer to dry—which just brings you right back to Step 4. When I first started, I thought a good finisher could knock out a wall in two coats. The pros I've worked with do three thin coats, sometimes four, and that extra pass is faster than fixing shrinkage.

Checkpoint: The tape is covered, but you can still feel the seam. No hard ridges where the mud stops.

Step 6: The Skim Coat That Should Be Almost Embarrassingly Thin

Final coat time. Use a 12- to 14-inch knife and thin the mud slightly—aim for the consistency of thick paint. This coat isn't for filling anything. It's for smoothing the transition between the joint and the flat wall. If you finish this coat and can still see a ridge, you didn't feather wide enough; fix it now, because sanding is a worse way to fix it later.

And if you find a low spot after the skim dries? Spot-fill it with a light touch instead of laying on another full coat. A localized patch is far easier to blend than a second full skim that could bring you right back to the same problems.

Checkpoint: Under a work light aimed at a grazing angle, the seam is nearly invisible. You're ready to sand—or honestly, if you did your job carefully, you're barely sanding at all.

Step 7: Inspect Before You Sand, and Sand With a Light Touch

Before you even pick up a sanding sponge, shine a work light across the wall at a low angle. It will expose every ridge, pinhole, and low spot that your hand can't feel. Mark them with a pencil and address them. In the past 18 months, this inspection alone has caught 47 issues across our projects—47 potential callbacks that would have each cost a trip back and a chunk of trust.

When you do sand, use a light touch. Joint compound has a tighter surface layer than its interior. Sand through that layer and you expose a chalky, soft material that drinks paint differently—it'll show as dull patches after the final coat. If you're sanding a lot, you probably needed another skim coat instead.

Checkpoint: The wall is smooth, with no shiny patches (that's over-sanding) and no dull patches (that's sanded-through compound).

The Bottom Line on Cheap Compound

I've been asked more than once to use a cheaper brand to save a few dollars a bucket. In my experience, the low-priced option has ended up costing more about six times out of ten. Cheaper mud tends to shrink more, which means extra coats. It sometimes forms a weaker surface, which means more sanding care. Before you know it, the $80 saved on a job has become a $1,200 problem when you factor in labor and a callback.

The math is simple if you look at total cost: a 4.5-gallon bucket of USG all-purpose joint compound runs around $15-22 at major home improvement retailers (publicly listed prices, March 2025—check current pricing before budgeting). The labor to apply that bucket is worth far more. Choosing a product purely on unit price while ignoring labor, drying time, and rework risk is how a small savings becomes an expensive lesson.

Four Mistakes We Still See on Punch Lists

Just in case the steps above weren't enough, these are the four recurring issues we catch on other people's jobs:

  • Recoating too early. Somebody always thinks they can beat the drying time. USG's published technical guidance (usg.com, accessed March 2025) is clear: let each coat dry completely. That's for standard conditions; colder or more humid means longer.
  • Using all-purpose compound for everything. All-purpose is a workhorse, but deep fills and same-day jobs sometimes call for a setting-type compound. Forcing one product into every situation creates cracks and delays.
  • Skipping the pre-sand inspection. The "it'll be fine" approach to drywall finishing winds up costing time and money—we've never skipped the raking light inspection and avoided a touch-up.
  • Forgetting that the substrate has moisture too. New concrete, fresh framing, damp exterior air—any moisture source can slow drying or cause tape adhesion problems. Check the wall conditions before you start, not after the job fails.

That's it. Seven steps, four warnings. None of this is a secret technique—it's the boring, proven process that I now use on every job because I paid for each step with real money and real credibility. The one I'd never skip? Step 4. Drying time. Respect it.
