Start with triage, not brand loyalty
There’s no honest answer to “what joint compound should I use on a rush drywall job?” until I know which part of the room is failing. But for a small repair, that tradeoff is fine. I care more about keeping the job simple than saving ten minutes in the sanding stage.

When the job gets bigger, I switch to USG Pro-4. The first thing I check in the USG Pro-4 specs is the product type: it is a lightweight all-purpose compound. That means Pro-4 is designed to do more than just top-coat. It is still a drywall finishing compound for taping, filling, and finishing. The practical difference is in handling. The pail is lighter, the mud feels smoother on the knife, and sanding produces less dust and fewer deep scratches.
If you need exact coverage rates and dry times, check the current USG product data sheet before you start. I don’t quote those numbers from memory because product formulas change and local humidity affects drying time more than people expect. The real point of Pro-4 on a rush job is that it sands easier. Easier sanding means fewer passes. Fewer passes means less labor. And labor is where the actual cost of a drywall finish gets decided.
Here is where I’m opinionated: a bucket of regular all-purpose compound can be cheaper than Pro-4 at the list price, but if it costs an extra hour of sanding with two finishers on site, the cheaper bucket just cost you more. I’ve learned to ask what is not included in a material quote before I compare price tags. Transparent pricing is not about which number is lower. It is about which number reflects the actual job.
How to choose between USG Sheetrock All Purpose Joint Compound and Pro-4
If you are fixing a nail pop or a small cutout, regular all-purpose compound is fine. If you are finishing fresh board across a large wall, Pro-4 is worth the premium. And if you are not sure, use all-purpose for the taping coat and Pro-4 for the final coats. That combination works on many older-house repairs.
But if your true deadline is the same day, ready-mixed compound is not the fastest route. I usually pair those products with setting-type compound for deep fills because a 20- or 45-minute setting compound gives me a hard base much faster than a drying-type compound. That is a separate decision tree, but it often shows up on the same emergency job.
Branch 2: If the problem is a sliding door, put the glass cutter down
Not every emergency is a drywall emergency. A broken glass panel in a sliding door is a completely different kind of deadline. I get called for these because a client thinks any experienced contractor can cut glass on site. The reality is less flexible.
A hand glass cutter is designed for untempered, annealed glass. It scores a line and then the glass snaps along that line. Tempered glass, which is what most modern sliding door panels use, cannot be cut after tempering. If you try to score tempered glass with a glass cutter, the tool may leave a light scratch, but the panel will not break cleanly. If it does break, it can shatter into small pieces. That is dangerous and expensive.

It is the right tool for mirrors, picture frames, cabinet shelves, and single-pane annealed glass. It is not the right tool for a tempered sliding door unit.

If you are using a glass cutter on the correct type of glass, the technique matters. Clean the surface, use a straightedge, score one continuous line with even pressure, and then snap the pane over a hard edge. Do not score the same line twice. That creates a ragged break.
Branch 3: Brown paint is not a lucky guess
Once the drywall compound is flat and sanded, another issue can ruin a tight schedule: paint color. If the repaired area sits next to a brown wall, a white patch will look like a cloud until it is primed and tinted correctly.

If you are mixing a small batch on site, the fastest formula I know starts with orange, not black. Mix red and yellow paint until it looks like orange, then add a very small amount of blue. The blue neutralizes the orange and gives you a brown. If you need a warmer brown, add more red. If you need it deeper, add another drop of blue. Do not start with black and yellow. In most cheap paint systems, that creates a greenish gray instead of a rich brown. And do not trust a wet color match. Paint dries differently, so paint a small test patch, wait 15 minutes, and check it under natural daylight before coating the whole repair.

- If the wall is smooth but the color does not match, it is a paint branch. Prime the bare compound first, then mix a small test batch or get a machine color match.
