The extra material cost is a small premium compared to what a failed install costs.

Choose traditional cement board if: you're on a tight material budget, you have experienced crews who know how to install it fast, and the project is a dry area with low moisture exposure. It's also a reasonable choice for a careful DIY project where timeline doesn't drive the decision.

I'll be direct with you: I've seen excellent work with both boards, and I've seen failures with both. The brand isn't a guarantee. Proper installation, joint treatment, and a correctly applied waterproofing membrane are non-negotiable no matter what you choose. Don't let anyone convince you the board alone makes a shower waterproof.
