Everyone Starts With the Same Price Question
I’m the office administrator for a 42-person design-build firm, and I manage most of our material ordering—roughly $1.1 million a year across ten vendors. I report to operations and finance, so my job is equal parts sourcing and paperwork. Fourth, I factor in the cost of rework and schedule risk. A material that needs to be replaced after installation isn’t cheaper. A delayed project isn’t cheaper. The total installed cost is the only number that matters.
I also check environmental claims the same way. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), statements like “recyclable” have to be substantiated and not misleading. If a green claim matters to the project, I ask for third-party certifications and specific documentation. That protects the project and the company.
The elevator project ended up fine. The USG #1 Pottery Plaster project ended up fine too. Not because we found the lowest price, but because we made sure every bid included the same system, the same paperwork, and the same risks. My advice is simple: don’t buy a line-item price. Buy the full solution, understand it, and then compare.
